Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is a polyamide used in most countries to produce polyethylene resin, resin, bottle and engineering polyester resins. These bottles have the high resistance to fracture, temperature, gas infiltration, low weight and cheaper prices than other packaging materials such as glass and metal, the production of plastic bottles of this resin has been widely used.

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is used to produce bottles, sheets, belts and injectable parts. PET bottles are used to pack a wide range of products, including mineral water, carbonated beverages, vegetable oils, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Today, these bottles have become very unique in the packaging industry.

Type of Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is into three main categories:

Bottle Grade

Textile grade, Super Bright

Film Grade

Usage Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is a form of polyester that is used in the production of plastic bottles and containers for food, beverages, and cosmetics. It is popular among manufacturers for its ease of production, transparency, lightweight, and the fact that is easily recyclable. Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is used in not only the production of containers and packaging but also in the creation of polyester clothing.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic polyester engineering resin. When you use PET as an injection molding compound, PET must be reinforced with glass and minerals. When PET is reinforcement, its strength, rigidity and heat resistance properties are enhanced.

Because its mechanical and electrical properties are so broad, PET is often used to replace metals in motor housings, switches, sensors and other electrical applications.

Advantages and limitation of Polyethylene Terephthalate:

PET has broad range of use temperature, from -60 to 130°C, PET has low gas permeability, in particularly with carbon dioxide. Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is suitable for transparent applications, when quenching during processing. Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is practically shatter-resistant and hence, a suitable glass-replacement in some applications, It has higher strength and stiffness than PBT. It is recyclable and transparent to microwave radiation. Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is approved as safe for contact with foods and beverages. It exhibits excellent electrical insulating properties

Limitations of Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET: Process limitations, proper drying prior to molding.

Polyethylene Terephthalate is Lower impact strength than PBT, Polyethylene Terephthalate is Lower mold ability than PBT, due its slow crystallization rate .The boiling water affect Polyethylene Terephthalate. Alkalis and strong bases affect Polyethylene Terephthalate.

Excellent resistance to alcohols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, oils, greases and diluted acids and moderate resistance to diluted alkalis, aromatic & halogenated hydrocarbons

Production Process for Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET

PET is produced by the polymerization of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Ethylene glycol is a colorless liquid obtained from ethylene, and terephthalic acid is a crystalline solid obtained from xylene. When heated together under the influence of chemical catalysts, ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid produce PET in the form of a molten, viscous mass that can be spun directly to fibres or solidified for later processing as a plastic.

Can Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET be recycled?

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is among those plastics which are an important part of your everyday life. It is an important commercial polymer having application ranging from packaging, fabrics, films, molded parts for automotive, electronics... and many more. You can find this famous clear plastic around you as water bottle container.

Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET is the most widely recycled plastic. Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET bottles and containers are commonly melted down and spun into fibres for fiberfill or carpets. When collected in a suitably pure state, Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET can be recycled into its original uses, and methods have been devised for breaking the polymer down into its chemical precursors for resynthesizing into PET.
